Young Horse Training

Bow Brickhill Stables specializes in the training of young horses, under the

nurturing eye of trainer Tik Maynard.  Packages start at $1500 per month which

include, training and pasture board.

When you entrust such a crucial stage of your horse's development into the

hands of a trainer, it is important to know that you share the same philosophy.

Tik says on colt training: "How your horse is started has implications on how he

will connect with you in years to come.  It is of utmost importance that he be

started correctly. I want him to be relaxed when you get on, and I want him to

trot willingly forward when you put your leg on him. My goal is cooperation not

submission. You will achieve more if your horse is a willing participant rather than

sparring partner."

My mother rode up until the day before I was born.  I have spent my entire life with horses.  Through the years I have come to realize and appreciate that starting young horses and developing the basics takes a different skill set than riding riding the finished product.  There may be challenge and excitement in developing each filly or colt; but more than that, there is a system and a language.  It takes patience to put it all together.

Two of the biggest influences I've had in colt starting are the teachings of Bruce Logan and Jonathan Field; interestingly, they both spent time learning from Pat Parelli early in their careers.

It is irrelevant what your colt's future job is: dressage, jumper, hunter, racing, reining etc.  Starting them off correctly sets them up to do the best they can with their natural abilities.   I look forward to helping your horse start his or her career on the ground and then under saddle."

"Just wanted to let you know Wesley [aged 3] is behaving wonderfully at Devon.

He won a ribbon in his class, but mainly he is relaxed and settled thanks to

thanks to the work Tik did with him.  Thank you so much!"

In this video, Tik demonstrates how he uses groundwork methods on the performance horse, here with On Cue a young eventer ridden by Sinead Halpin.
In a series of videos beutifully filmed by Paws and Rewind LLC, we are following the progress of one of our young horses, Graceful Queen (aka Grace).  In the second video of the series, Bow Brickhill Stables' head trainer Tik Maynard explains his approach to training young horses as he demonstrates 11 month old Grace's ease when confronted with trailer loading and basic obstacles in the outdoor arena.
